Flash Fiction, Too: Perfecting Your Craft

In flash fiction, every word must matter. This workshop is designed to create new flash pieces at an advanced level and to prepare work for publication. Many literary magazines are seeking flash fiction, but you must be skilled enough to hit the right notes to distill life's most revealing moments into a flash of truth and insight. To accomplish this, our focus will be on tightening text, strengthening theme, and heightening reader engagement. We will examine word choice, the imagery thread, proper balance between showing and telling, and only using dialogue that propels the story forward. While we will be concentrating on short pieces, these are essential skills that can be applied to all writing genres. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their work in class and the instructor will provide constructive critiques for final work.

***Note: To register for this workshop, students need to have taken the first Flash Fiction Workshop or submit equivalent work to the instructor.
