LET ME TELL YOU A STORY: PART TWO (REGISTERING)

At the core of every good tale is a character with whom the reader wants to spend time. Discover how to move beyond the superficial and cliché, crafting characters who invite the reader to explore the human condition and universal truths. Weekly exercises will help you build your character from the inside out (and remember, in memoir, that character is you). We will uncover your character's inner values and present them in ways that are integral to your story. In addition, we will examine effective techniques for character description, dialogue, internal and external characterization and conflict, and understand what influences reader empathy.

This five-session course is intentionally small so that participants will have time to discuss questions regarding their individual projects. Sample readings will illustrate our discussions and in-class exercises will help students create or better a memorable character who can carry the weight of a story and tug at a reader's heart.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit writing for class discussion. This workshop will benefit those writing flash fiction, short stories, novels, or memoir employing fictional techniques.
